Our Review

Sting summarizes his first 25 years as a solo artist with this well-rounded collection that includes an interview, recent remixes of many key songs, and remastered sound throughout. Sting personally chose the songs here, and it’s mostly what fans would expect with a few surprises. The remastered sound makes for a rewarding experience. Sting’s unusual mix of world sounds with reggae grooves, jazz, and pop makes for a singular experience, and the enduring greatness of “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free,” “Fortress Around Your Heart,” “Englishman in New York” and “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You” is matched by the beauty, craft, and sincerity of “Seven Days,” “The Hounds of Winter,” and “We Work the Black Seam.” Even the mild hip-hop mashup with Mary J. Blige (“Whenever I Say Your Name”) takes the music into new territory. Whatever Sting attempts becomes Sting music. There aren’t many artists you can say that about.

What is the point of this album… (2 stars)

…other than to get people to buy songs they've bought before?

I'm a Sting fan, but really, he should make a record that doesn't involve the lute or 10th century Gregorian chants and stop repackaging his old stuff. It's not like he needs the money. There's a fine line between pushing one's boundaries and being self-indulgent, but Sting has pretty clearly crossed it in recent years…

Love Sting, but… (2 stars)

I agree with the other reviewer…I love Sting. Really, really love him, but I wish he'd stop rereleasing the old stuff or remixing the old stuff or rerecording it with such and such orchestra. We need new Sting! PLEASE!!!!!!!

MASTERFUL! (5 stars)

We're blessed to have been able to hear from him in our lifetime. He's truly the best of the best!

After disbanding the Police at the peak of their popularity in 1984, Sting quickly established himself as a viable solo artist, one obsessed with expanding the boundaries of pop music. Sting incorporated heavy elements of jazz, classical, and worldbeat into his music, writing lyrics that were literate and self-consciously meaningful, and he was never afraid to emphasize this fact in the press. For such unabashed ambition, he was equally loved and reviled, with supporters believing that he was at…
