Our Review

Joe Cocker’s self-titled second album, released in 1969 just months after his debut, With a Little Help from My Friends, continued with the same winning approach that perfectly cast the British soul man as an expert interpretive singer. It's generally considered to be the finest album of Cocker’s long career. Again, he interprets the Beatles (“She Came In Through the Bathroom Window,” “Something”) and Bob Dylan (“Dear Landlord”). He adds one co-write of his own with Chris Stainton for “That’s Your Business” and chooses liberally for the rest: John Sebastian’s “Darlin’ Be Home Soon,” Lloyd Price’s “Lawdy Miss Clawdy” and Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on the Wire,” among the highlights. Musical director Leon Russell slips Cocker “Delta Lady” and “Hello, Little Friend” and the musical direction in general, aided by Denny Cordell, tends towards the bluesier side with Cocker’s backing group of the time, the Grease Band, filling the groove with a firm yet laid-back authority. The expanded edition includes another Beatles cover (“Let It Be”) and another fine Cocker-Stainton original with “She’s Good To Me.”

Joe Cocker! (5 stars)

"I have tried,in my way,to be free.." Joe Cocker's first LP truly was "With A Little Help From My Friends"; heavy friends indeed! But this second helping, generously served up by guitar-piano-arranger Leon Russell was a sumptuous feast for all! They took this album's musicians and songs on the road for the awesome "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" Tour and Movie! "Joe Cocker" is an intoxicating brew of America

A Gem of the Era! (5 stars)

This may well be one of the best recordings from late '69-early '70. Blues, rock and soul all fused into a killer album. Nearly 40 years after its release, I can listen to this any time, any day, and come away with a smile on my face. This belongs in anyone's collection of definitive albums of the "classic rock" era.

Little Gem (5 stars)

Joe before he shredded his voice. Nothing like this album. Still sounds great – probably one of the top 100 rock albums.

After starting out as an unsuccessful pop singer (working under the name Vance Arnold), Joe Cocker found his niche singing rock and soul in the pubs of England with his superb backing group, the Grease Band. He hit number one in the U.K. in November 1968 with his version of the Beatles' “A Little Help from My Friends.” His career really took off after he sang that song at the Woodstock festival in August 1969. A second British hit came with a version of Leon Russell's “Delta Lady” in the fall of…
